How To Start A Blog And Make Money Online On WordPress
1. Understand The Benefits Of Blogging
While this post is about how to start a blog and make money, you need to have some basic understanding of blogging itself.
Continue reading as it will help shape your mindset about blogging.
A blog is a website (or part of a website) with updated posts on any topic. It serves as two-way communication between you and your audience.
And one of the main reasons I prefer blogging to starting your online business is that it allows for errors.
If you write poorly in the beginning, that wouldn’t bring about the end of your site. The worst to happen is that no one wants to read your article.
Besides the low consequence for errors, blogging also cost less to start. You don’t pay to do market research unlike when launching a product.
Today, I still have some of those articles I wrote when I started blogging. Though, I have edited and republished them to meet with standards.
It only took time to learn and implement. You also will get there to become a professional blogger.
Why Do You Need To Start A Blog?
While blogging favors both individuals and businesses, I will focus on the latter. So with blogging, you:
- Position yourself to be a thought leader.
- Increase your website traffic via SEO.
- Target specific customers and generate leads.
- Increase sales of products or services.
- You connect and network with like-minded bloggers.
A blog can help you build a relationship with customers and reinforce your brand in the shortest time possible.
Successful bloggers around the globe have also proved that starting a blog is one of the quickest ways to make money online.
Unlike other businesses, you don’t need any certifications, credentials, or third-party approval to start a blog on WordPress.
And you don’t need to be a mighty writer or a pro web designer on WordPress to learn how to start a blog and make money.
2. Choose An Evergreen Niche
If you want to start and own a profitable blog, in the long run, it begins with a good niche. Because working hard is not as important as working on the right thing.
Here are three mistakes to avoid when choosing a niche:
- Choosing a niche for a hobby
- Choosing a niche because of money
- Starting in a niche you know nothing about.
I bet you won’t last before you give up.
The question is not what your passion is or what you like to do but “What are your strengths?”
What can you do better than anyone you have ever seen?
I must confess that most bloggers are struggling today because they missed this from the beginning.
This is the very reason I encourage people to find an excellent mentor to help scale through the hurdles.
If you blog about any of the wrong reasons above, at some point you will struggle with publishing. You will run out of ideas and lack consistency.
So, don’t waste your years putting your energy into what can’t stand the test of time.
Five Major Niches With Sub-Niches
- Health Niches (Beauty and Make-up, Healthy Eating and Fitness, Food and Lifestyle, etc.)
- Wealth Niches (Entrepreneurship and Business, Finance and Investment, etc)
- Relationship Niches (Youth Dating, Courtship Dating, Marriage Success, Parenting, etc.)
- Technology (Phone and Tablets Reviews, Computer Repair, etc)
- Self-Help Niches (Do-It-Yourself Projects, Career, and Leadership, Stress and Productivity, etc)
It is best to start from a sub-niche, as it makes it easy to grow faster and establish authority.
Also, rather than learning how to start a blog and make money online with the relationship niche, blog on dating for men.
After choosing your niche, the next is to confirm that there is a hungry market for it.
Remember, I didn’t say large audience. I said a hungry market.
A hungry market is a market of people with specific problems. And these people are capable and willing to pay for your products or services.
If you blog for students, that’s a large audience. But you will not make much as expected since students mostly don’t have the buying capacity and are not ready to spend.
In choosing a niche, you don’t need to blog on topics no one has blogged about before.
Don’t re-invent the wheel. Don’t swim against the tide, follow it.
There are a lot of blogging platforms you can use in starting your own blogs such as Wix.com, WordPress.com, and more.
But the downside is that they will limit your options and you will most likely later spend more when you decide to upgrade.
So, what is the best website builder to start a blog? WordPress.
WordPress is a software application you can use to create, edit and publish your digital content. It is the most popular among content management systems.
As of the time I am writing this post, WordPress covers over 45% of websites online. This is because it is an open-source system that is very easy to use.
Oluboba is also using WordPress. I use it for no other reason than the plugins available for almost any features you need. Also, the support (resources) is great.
So, as you learn how to start a blog and make money, understand that WordPress is the best website builder out there.
4. Choose A Unique Domain Name
A domain name is the name of a website. It is the address that web users can use to locate your blog on the internet.
What an address is to a location, a domain name is to a website. Oluboba.com is the domain name (address) of this website.
And the first thing your potential customers will see is your domain name even before they arrive on your website. So, you have to be careful about settling for a name.
Few Rules Before You Buy A Domain Name
- Use .com
There are lots of domains name extensions out there (.org, .net, and more) but none communicate more professionalism than a [.com].
Right from the days of blogging, [.com] has been the most established and trusted domain name extension.
- Choose a Generic Name
If you are in for a long time business, use a generic name. An example of a generic name is Spotile.com
Using such a name makes it easy to expand your blog to other topics if you ever decide to do so later.
Also, your personal name is a generic name just like mine – Oluboba.com
- Choose a Short and Memorable Name
The best way to help your readers remember you is to use a short name. The shorter the better.
It’s a pity that all four letters .com domain name is no longer available. So, you need to settle with five letters but less than ten letters.
- Don’t use hyphens or numbers. You readers may forget them.
- Avoid domain names containing double letters.
- Stay away from the trademark names.
You can read more about 11 things to consider before you buy a domain name here.
5. Get Hosted To Start A Blog On WordPress

Web hosting is a service provided to you so your blog can be accessible across the web.

Choosing the right hosting company when starting a blog is one of the best investments you will ever make.

5. Get More Familiar With WordPress Interface
So, I will give you quick knowledge of other core elements in WordPress with my recommendations for each.
This is a quick overview of everything you have on your website. It is the first thing you see when you log in via the backend (all things being equal).
The menu is the collection of links that you see at the top header of a website. You can rearrange your page/post link by clicking the menu link under the appearance tab.
Widgets are those boxes you see in the header, footer, or sidebar of a website. You can include in it, recent posts, top pages, search buttons, and many more.
- Settings > General:
This is where you can define the official name of your website, like how you want to see it everywhere.
But please, avoid editing the WordPress Address or Site Address. Leave most options in the settings as they are so you don’t break your site.
- Pages and Posts:
These are the interfaces where you publish content on your website. While they may look alike, they are not the same.
A page is where you publish key contents of your website like your homepage, about page, contact page, and more.
A post is where you share knowledge and discuss topics with your readers so they also can respond.
6. Install The Best WordPress Themes
Your blog design starts with a WordPress theme. It gives your blog a pleasant appearance. And WordPress has thousands of free themes in its directory you can choose from.
So, I want to be careful so you don’t fall victim to indecision.
Your number one priority in learning how to start a blog is to share your knowledge on a given topic and make money with it.
So, let’s install a free theme.
Click on the Appearance menu on the left. At the top of the newly loaded page, click on the button with the text, “Add New”.
It loads a page where you see lots of free themes you can choose from.
I recommend the GeneratePress theme because it is easy for you to start with as a beginner. Also, it is a fast theme with a clean interface and loads in less than 3 seconds.
So, type GeneratePress into the search form
But if you want lots of options to customize your site to your taste, get the premium version.
To install the premium theme, click on the “Upload Theme” button at the top of the page.
Choose your file and click install now to download the theme to your website.
Once the installation is complete, click the “Activate” button and you’re all set.
WordPress allows you to make as many changes as you want to your blog. To begin, click the appearance menu link and click on Customize button.
Below are resources that explain how you can customize your theme to your taste.
Now, we need plugins to make the blog look rich.
7. Grow Your Blog With The Best WordPress Plugins
Plugins are lines of code you can use to expand and enhance your blog functionality. They can extend your blog theme by adding more features to it.
- Go to Plugins on the left side of your screen and click on Add New
- Click the Upload Plugin button at the top left.
- Click install and then activate to use the plugin.
If you want to use a downloaded plugin, click on the upload. Choose the plugin from your system, upload it, and activate it.
I know you may need help with what plugins to use. Below are major plugins I recommend to start a blog on WordPress.
Rank Math is a Search Engine Optimization plugin for WordPress that makes it easy for you to optimize your content and rank on search engines.
Boost your WordPress websites’ core web vitals in a few clicks with this lightweight and easy-to-use speed plugin.
Keep the bad guys out and protect your WordPress site from viruses and malware.
8. Get People To Keep Reading Your Content
When I start my blog, I found it difficult to share my articles, and that limits my opportunity to make more money early.
But soon I realized that if you don’t promote yourself, no one else would. Below are ways to promote your brand:
a) Share On Social Media
If I need to remind you of the need for social media as part of your strategy, then you are not ready for business.
Social media is one key medium to create that lasting impression and reach out to many people.
While there are many social media platforms out there, I advise focusing on The Big 3 – Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
You can create a social media cover page that contains your unique selling proposition. This way, people can know who you are and what you do.
Also, when you finish publishing a blog post, please do well to share it on your pages – it helps.
When your followers see it, they visit your website to read and also share it on their timelines. And this is how your popularity begins.
Below are tips to make the best of your social media pages
- Use a username that is available on all social media. It makes it easy for readers to locate you and helps with branding.
- If your blog has your name, then use actual images of yourself as a profile picture. But if it is a business name, use a logo.
- Engage more with other social media pages in your industry.
- Publishing quality content and staying active are the best ways to stand out from the majority.
b) Leave A Comment
Some are of the school of thought that it is not important to open your blog articles for commenting while others said it is.
While it may not be important for authority figures in the industry, it is for a beginner.
You need to hear from your readers. You need their feedback to know what they want.
By doing this, you are promoting your brand.
I have had people visit my website because they saw my comment on another blog article.
In the comment field named, website, I like to link back to a specific post on my blog relating to the post I am commenting on.
And when you do comment on people’s blogs, please be genuine about by writing something worth reading.
This way, the website owner won’t flag your comment as spam.
So, rather than waiting for people to come comment on your blog, go to other blogs to comment.
Because it is indeed a great way to promote your brand.
c) Email Your Subscribers
Before ending this section about how to start a blog and make money, I would speak about having your email list.
Most people who visited your blog post will never come back. If only you can get a small percentage of this number.
The success of any blog depends on its ability to bring back readers on a daily or weekly basis.
Publishing content is not enough. You must ensure you have a means of reaching out to your interested readers all at once.
But you will say, “What about social media?”
Do I still need to remind you that the social algorithm only allows a few (less than 5%) to see your post?
Though, you can get my book on Social Media For Business to best understand how best to turn this to your advantage.
So, start collecting emails to ease your stress of making money from blogging. And the best way to collect emails is via your homepage and pop up.
Then, interested readers can subscribe while you email them excerpts of your content.
To know better, I encourage you to read more about the best email marketing strategies.
d) Do Guest Blogging
Guest blogging is a beautiful way to reach millions of readers on other blogs while increasing your brand. It offers you the opportunity to submit relevant articles to other blogs.
If the site owner accepts your article, it then goes live on their blog. Then, the author adds the following details to the post as your reward for the post.
- Your bio and picture (optional)
- Short blog’s description and link back
- Link to your social media pages.
So, when someone finishes reading your article, he/she may click on your links to know you more.
While most site owners will place your details at the end of your article, others will make you an author on the blog.
It is better to have author access as it helps you to submit new articles and update existing ones.
Now, when writing your blog description on your guest post, be brief about it. An example is this:
Hi, I am Oluboba, am an eCommerce Specialist, helping products businesses attract more customers online via proven digital marketing strategies. More @ Oluboba.com
Bloggers love to receive guest posts because it keeps their readers updated and introduced them to a new style of writing.
So, email them using the template below:
Hi (Site Owner), I would like to appreciate the knowledge in writing such an educative article (include article link).
It was really educative that even a newbie will understand all the keynotes in the article.
I am reaching out to you to request if I could write a guest post for your blog to complement (mention the above-stated link) or any other you would have me write.
I assure the article will be original and provide value to your readers.
Thank you as I look forward to hearing from you.
The above template is simple and to the point. So, expect it to get to your recipient’s inbox, not spam.
If they write you back, you will know what to do next. But if they don’t reply in 3 days, send a reminder.
As a blogger, it is to your success if you embrace guest blogging. Because with it, you can attract thousands of people to your blog every month.
How To Make Money Blogging On WordPress
I am sure your end goal with business, even before learning how to start a blog on WordPress, is to make money.
Yes, you want to build an online business that pays and later replaces your current job.
So, whether you are just starting or already a full-time blogger, there is always a new way you can make more money with your blog.
Let’s see how possible this is.
Affiliate Marketing is persuading people to buy a company’s products from you. This concept has proven the easiest way to make money online without stress.
This company then pays you a certain amount for every successful sale. They can pay you a fixed amount or by an overall percentage.
All you need to do is to register with the best affiliate marketing programs and networks.
I started this business model as far back as an undergraduate. Unlike now, most affiliate programs then wouldn’t need you to have a blog to start.
Then, I would help both students place orders on Jumia. By doing this, Jumia pays me a commission.
And since people are skeptical about internet transactions, they trusted me to make the order. Which means more money for me.
While it was fun in those days; it was also stressful reaching out to each person.
But today, with just one blog post, Jumia Black Friday Phone Price List, I have had more sales than you can imagine.
Now, this is a way of letting you know that having a blog makes it easy to start a successful affiliate marketing business.
Because a criterion before any major affiliate companies approve your account is verifying the organic traffic on your blog.
To know more, read my 5000+ words here on how to start an affiliate marketing business that pays you daily.
2. Sell Your Products
While it is good to sell someone’s products, it is more honorable to sell yours.
This way, you don’t have to share the profits with anyone. Another reason to sell your own product is because of the values it brings you.
Let me give you an example.
When I started with this blog, my goal was and remains to help people with the best content and resources to start a business and grow their finance.
Soon, I began receiving emails upon emails, on how my contents had been of help (Thank you all).
Then, a site visitor emailed me about how she had spent so much on social media ads to sell her products.
That even though the ads were bringing returns, she knew it was not the best business model.
She then asked for my advice.
Right there, I knew it was time to write a book. Five weeks later, I published a book titled Social Media For Business.
SMB explains the within and without a strategy to boost your social media presence and win customers on noisy platforms without paying for ads.
Just three hours of listing SMB on my blog, I had sales coming in, today and till tomorrow.
So, apart from the money, there is no greater joy than seeing people buy your products–you feel honored. A sense that they recognized your value and reward you 100% for it.
Informational products like books are one of the best products you can sell. Because they are easy to produce and have low production costs.
But if you are just starting like I want to believe you are, please don’t write a book yet.
Stick more with affiliate marketing. Sell people’s products to know how this business works.
Because you deserve better, I encourage you to get a copy of Social Media For Business.
3. Sell Membership Access
Forum is an easy way to make money blogging. You create a site where only people who pay can access specialized knowledge.
The concept behind private membership is to offer premium services that are not available to the public.
There will always be this raw and unedited truth of a business that a coach only shares only share with insiders.
While I try to give out my best content for free, it takes signing up for my coaching program to have me guide you step by step.
So, if a reader will show more commitment by paying for a coaching program, then he or she deserves better.
The same thing applies to you. You will go the extra length to do more for those who pay.
If you are wondering, “Do people pay for premium content?” Yes, they do.
People pay membership fees for one or two of the following reasons.
- They want specific knowledge tailored to their challenge, not the general ones on blogs.
- They want to network with other like-minded members of your ecosystem.
- It interests them to know they will learn more in close contact.
- They need you to be with them and watch them as they implement whatever they had learned from you.
You can show people the finished products of your works while you ask them to become a member to access video tutorials on how you built the products.
The complete business model of paid membership lies in the quote below.
Give the public the WHAT, but let them pay for the HOW.Oluboba Ayodeji
In the end, your success with a paid membership forum depends on creating tutorials and sharing exclusive resources.
Paid membership will increase the value of your website. If you can, please do.
4. Sell Banner Space
Another way to start a blog and make money is by selling ad space. This method is very convenient since you decide the terms and conditions.
So, let’s assume you blog about lifestyle. Once you get to a particular success height, traveling agencies will start reaching out to you to place their banners on your blog.
This way, you can charge per banner or use the subscription business model.
These banners come in shapes and sizes, which makes them easy to place in major positions without distracting your readers.
About making money with banner placement? You can do so in two ways.
You can sell banner space directly using digital marketing tools like Ad Inserter Pro.
Or you can partner with a banner ad marketplace like BuySellAds to sell advertising space.
I mostly prefer the first because of the control it offers. The banner advertising business is very much alive and ever-growing.
5. Google AdSense
You can’t finish reading an article on how to start a blog and make money online on WordPress without mentioning AdSense.
AdSense remains one of the easiest ways to earn a living with your blog.
Google has made this process so easy that the only work on your part is to place the code in key positions on your blog.
The other work is being consistent with your core duty of posting articles, while Google keeps rewarding you when people click.
I could remember when I earned my first dollars via AdSense. You need to see the joy all over me.
Soo, I had to remove it because of its downside. You won’t earn much compared to what you are giving out.
Also, AdSense has a way of affecting one of your key digital marketing metrics called bounce rate.
While you may think you are earning, you are actually hurting your website except you run a news blog.
That is why I encourage you to see AdSense as your last option and use it with caution.
5 Things Every Serious Blogger Must Do To Make Money Blogging
I would like to end this article on how to start a blog and make money with 10 things every blogger must do to succeed.
All tips that I have mentioned below are not optional but compulsory if you want to rise above the average.
This way, you can create the best blogging experience for your readers and grow your brand in a quick time.
1. Own Your Brand
Research shows that there are over 750 million blogs. That is scary.
With this ever-growing number of blogs, there is definitely one way to stand out. That is to own your brand.
Branding is key if your business must excel on the internet because it is the light of the business.
What are the major points of branding for blogs:
Your Domain Name
Naming is so important in business that it is the first thing people see even before they interact with your brand.
If your domain name sounds well, it makes it easy to become a household name. But if it’s awkward, nobody wants to associate with it.
Name can also be the reason your audience lands on another website because of spelling errors.
Few tips on choosing a suitable domain name for your blog:
- Don’t niche in your domain name because of future expansion. You may niche your topic, but not your name.
- Using your personal name to start a blog makes it easy to make money because people will trust and relate with you more.
- I found out that names less than 10 letters ease branding. E.g Oluboba, Spotile, Facebook, Coca-Cola, PayPal, and many more. The shorter the better.
I explained here the best tips on how to choose and buy a domain name on NameCheap.
Choose A Color
Whether or not you like it, you have associated red with Coca-Cola and blue with Facebook. That tells you the power of color.
In an online business, color can stand the difference between a successful brand and one that is not.
So, you must be selective to choose a color that appeals to your audience. In most cases, a primary and secondary color is all you need.
Below are colors are what they stand for
- Black – Authority, and Leadership
- Blue – Calm and Trustworthy
- Red – Excitement and Passion
- Green – Wealthy and Natural.
- Yellow – Happiness, and Positivity
Use A Logo
You cannot underestimate the place of the logo in building a successful brand for yourself or your blog.
Logo sticks with your readers so that they can recognize you anywhere they see it. So, my definition of a good logo is that it must be simple.
Getting a professional logo is affordable. Contact a graphics designer around you to get you a great logo design.
2. Get A Professional Website Design
You were told not to judge a book by its cover. But trust me, people will judge your website by its look.
A unique website design will stand you out in the ocean of competitors.
Even though I am using a premium theme, I have altered the code to suit my taste.
Rather than struggling with free themes, choose your design from the list of best WordPress Themes for blogs
Last, you should know that no website design can guarantee you will make sales. It can only enhance user experience but can’t guarantee.
So, I don’t want you to become too distracted by trying to create the most beautiful blog in the world. All you need is to ensure that you have your core pages ready and basic settings in place.
As a matter of fact, some of the biggest bloggers out there have simple websites without noticeable designs. This way, they get their reader to focus on what is most important.
Another good option is to hire a web designer to design you a professional website. The return on investment is greater.
3. Create Important Pages
To create a new page, hover the Page link (1) at the top menu of your left screen. Click the Add New (2) button on the top screen to create a new page.
Fill in the title (3) and the required information on the page interface (4). Afterward, you can click the Publish button at the top right of your screen and your page goes live.
Now, you can create the following important pages to start your blog on WordPress.
a) Blog Page
By default setting, your blog page will be your homepage. Whatever articles you publish from the post interface appear here automatically.
So, when people come to your website, they can see your most recent blog post.
So, leaving your blog page as your homepage does no harm. You will start seeing the beauty once you publish articles and upload images.
b) About Me Page
No one does business with a stranger or an unknown person. People want to know who is behind an idea or a movement.
And all you need to do is to write something about yourself from your heart — no forming, no packaging.
One of the best things you can do with this page is to add unedited images of yourself. But if you decide you want to get it perfect, then use a recorded video of you.
Check my about page to gain more inspiration.
c) Contact Page
The worst mistake you can make is not leaving a means for people to reach you. And you don’t need to put in a contact form or have any major designs before people can get in touch. No!
You only need to say, contact me at email@example.com (or any working email you have). Also, including your social media links and phone number (optional) helps.
Check out my contact page for inspiration.
d) Privacy and Disclosure Page
Legal pages only become necessary when you want to monetize your website or want to send emails.
But to fulfill all righteousness, go to freeprivacypolicy.com to generate a detailed policy statement that you can use.
You can also add this simple statement about affiliate disclosure that tells your readers that you make money via affiliate marketing programs.
Here is the statement:
I am an affiliate marketer with links redirecting to third-party websites on my pages. When you click and buy through any of these links, the company may pay me a commission without additional cost to you.
4. Publish Quality Content
Content is King!
That’s what you hear every blogger telling you. While that may be true, it is only one-sided.
The total truth is Relevant Content is King.
It is not enough to write but to write what people want to read. If no one is interested in your article, you are as good as not writing.
The best way to weigh your writing is to ask, “Will a reader find this article valuable and want to bookmark it?”
While most people rewrite other people’s ideas, I encourage you to write to solve a specific problem.
So, instead of writing about how to make money online, why not go for something more specific, like how to start an online business that pays daily with a blog?
Write articles that get your audience interested, answer their questions, and solve their problem.
On my blog, Oluboba.com, most people coming here are those looking for how to start a business.
It is no surprise why my articles revolve around business, marketing, and personal development.
But you don’t need to be in the business niche before you can have results. You can do better in any of the topics listed in the niche session.
So, start publishing quality content both on your blogs and when you guest post.
5. Monetize Early To Make More Money Blogging
One of the major aims of why you would start to blog was to make money. And you need to have that in mind.
It took me a year after my blog launch before I monetized it. You don’t have to wait that long if you are consistent with publishing.
Below is a recap of the best ways to make money online with blogging.
Sell Banner Space
This form of monetization strategy appears in almost all blogs. It is a concept where you rent out a space on your website to interested bidders to include their banner.
Sell People’s Product
You don’t have a product to sell? No problem. Sign up with the best affiliate programs in Nigeria to earn extra income.
