For example, if I teach it how to solve math problems, it can later be helpful in writing, planning, and gaming.

Reasoning is another concept. AGI should be able to look at a situation, understand it, and make intelligent choices, much like a human.

Autonomous learning is another. AGI needs to learn by itself. This isn’t learning in the usual “update and install new features” way. It’s the kind that figures things out on its own when faced with something new. That’s the key difference between AGI and common AI tools.

These tools are smart, but only for one thing. It’s not possible for them to switch. The bank bot can help with your account, but it can’t help you study or make travel plans. That’s artificial narrow intelligence.

But what about AGI? That’s something else.

With AGI, you don’t have to program every little thing. It doesn’t only do what it’s told. It figures out what to do.

Picture an AI that learns something new and then uses it the next day. Nothing new. No need to code. No need for a long training session. It changes, like we do when we learn.

Another key difference is how it decides. An AGI should be able to size up a situation, think, and pick the best way to go. It’s smart because it understands, not because you wrote the code. Regular AI can’t do that.

Look at how far tech has come when you consider tools we use every day, like USSD banking, and more. But we still have a long way to go. They’re good, but they have their limits. They can’t multitask. AGI’s goal is to surpass that.

The world’s biggest players are racing to dominate AGI, and we’re right here as it all happens.

Companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, and even Microsoft are in the lead. They spend billions yearly to develop smarter systems. 

It’s not only businesses. Countries are all in on this. The US, China, the UK, Canada, and Japan are pouring in tons of money, talents, and resources. They see AGI as a super useful tool, like electricity or the internet. They know whoever’s in charge of AGI could run the tech world.

Experts can’t seem to agree on when things will happen. AGI might arrive in the next 5-10 years, some say. Some people think it’ll take way longer. Yet, most people agree that we’re getting closer each year. You can tell by how much AI tools for businesses are improving.

Aritificial General Intelligence Benefits

Traditional AI is already making a difference. And I’m thinking about how much bigger things can get when AGI becomes more powerful.

The first thing is economic growth. I’ve seen how small businesses in Lagos and Abuja are using AI for marketing, and customer service. Picture AGI doing that, but way bigger. It can help businesses grow, solve issues fast, and even make new industries. That’ll create more jobs and boost the economy.

Another area where AGI can change everything. I’ve tried those telemedicine apps, and they’re good but not perfect. AGI could boost online healthcare, making it smarter, faster, and more personal. This will let doctors diagnose illnesses, see health trends, and help those in rural areas.

Education could be the best part for me. I always wanted school to feel more personal, and AGI can do that. Think about kids learning at their own speed, with lessons made for them. Even grown-ups can learn new things quicker with smart tutoring.

And then there’s fintech, which Nigeria’s and most part of the world is already bossing. AGI can catch fraud quicker, keep accounts safer, and make paying easier. This is important if you’ve lost money to a scam.

Also, Artificial General Intelligence could help farmers with weather, soil, crops, and pests. We’ll have better crops and reduce waste. Farmers have it rough; they’re always taking chances.

We can’t leave out the government either. With AGI’s help, getting an ID, paying taxes, or reporting problems could be a breeze. No more waiting around or lost paperwork.

Based on what I see, AGI is no longer a pipe dream. Nigeria has a great shot here to solve big problems and get stronger.

The Dangers and Ethics of AGI.

The more I get into AGI, the more I see the pros and cons. It’s crucial that we discuss AGI risks to understand the future. A lot of folks only care about the good stuff, but we should think about the ethics of super-smart AI.

A major worry is losing jobs. I’ve already seen AI tools doing jobs that people used to do. This could blow up with AGI. Yet, I’m sure new jobs will emerge, as we’ve seen with fintech, remote work, and digital marketing. The hard part is helping people change jobs.

And then there’s the problem of bias, plus data privacy. AI uses data, which can skew the results. This could get way worse with AGI if we aren’t careful. Also, no one wants to live in a world where we’re spied on. Surveillance is a valid concern.

Then, there is a fear of culture loss. If our systems focus too much on foreign data, we could lose touch with African culture. I’ve been thinking hard about this.

Because we’re talking about the risks doesn’t mean AGI is a bad thing. It’s all about balance. By understanding the risks upfront, we can use AGI in a smart and safe way that benefits everyone.

How Ready is Nigeria for AGI?

For me, figuring out if Nigeria is ready for AGI starts with looking at the growth of AI in the Nigerian economy. I’ve checked out AI tools in banking, shopping, getting around, and even healthcare. Fintech apps such as Opay, PalmPay, and Kuda uses AI for customer services. We’re using AI quite a bit, even though people don’t always know it.

But, we’re still facing some tough areas such as infrastructure. Power fails, the network crashes, and you can’t always count on things. AGI needs solid systems to perform well. And then, there’s a lack of data.

Nigeria has a massive population, yet we don’t have enough good data. AGI can’t learn how we do things without that. Plus, not having much money for research makes it tough for local experts to be as creative as the big guys.

But I’m still hopeful since Nigeria has real potential. Our young people are a real asset. I see young people everywhere, building apps, coding, or taking online courses. That’s a major plus. Our fintech bosses have us winning in some areas already. If we nail payments with AI, think what AGI could do. The tech scene is taking off in Lagos, Abuja, and beyond.

I’ve been monitoring what the government is doing. People are talking a lot more about AI policy in Nigeria. New committees, innovation hubs, and digital economy plans are everywhere. We’re not there yet, but the people in charge are paying attention.

I see Nigeria’s AGI readiness as a bit of a mixed bag: hard parts, but also huge possibilities. We’re getting there, but not there yet. By investing in infrastructure, and research, AGI can help Nigeria’s economy grow.

And I know now is the best time for us to get serious about it.

Common Misunderstandings About Artificial General Intelligence

People get a lot of wrong ideas about AGI from movies, and social media.

A common myth is that AGI will immediately destroy us all. Movies make AI seem like a scary thing that’s about to attack. But true AGI is not so. They’re still working on making it safe, useful, and manageable. Nope, the world’s not ending tomorrow.

“AGI is already here” is another funny thing to say. But the AI we have now is Artificial Narrow Intelligence and good at one thing. True AGI should be able to learn and think like a human. We’re still working on it.

And then there’s, “AGI and robots are the same thing.” People see a robot dancing or serving food and shout, “AGI!“. No! AGI is the thinking part, not the hardware. A robot can exist without AGI, and AGI can exist without a robot body. They’re different.

I love the myth that AGI will wipe out all jobs in a flash. But new tech makes new jobs, too. At first, Nigerians worried about the rise of fintech, but ended up creating lots of tech and support jobs. AGI will change work, for sure, but it won’t happen all at once.

That’s alright; these myths usually start with fear or confusion. As we learn more, it’s simpler to see AGI as a powerful tool that needs direction, not a threat.

In the list of AGI companies, OpenAI is the first one that comes up in conversation. They made ChatGPT, and if you’ve used it. You know it’s super smart.

And then there’s DeepMind. They’re the masterminds behind AlphaGo and some innovative AI. It’s amazing to see how this field is advancing, watching them.

I’m also following Anthropic. Their big focus is on safety, keeping AGI under wraps. That’s interesting; not all artificial general intelligence companies think about this so soon.

Sam Altman in his post on three observations predicted AGI could arrive within 10-20 years. Because AI is learning so fast, some believe it could happen sooner. It’s hard not to feel like we’re getting somewhere.

We’re likely to see some stages before we get to real AGI. So, we’ll start with multi AI systems that are great at multitasking. After that, we’ll have agentic AI that’s smart and autonomous. Next, we’ll see systems that learn almost the way we do. This is when we’ll finally have something that feels like AGI.

What I’m most enthusiastic about are the positive outcomes. AGI could do a lot of good in rural healthcare, where it’s hard to find doctors. I imagine classrooms where every kid gets one-on-one help, no matter their location. I can see farmers using smart AI to get live updates on their crops, the weather, and the soil. Here’s what makes me happy when thinking about what’s coming.

Then, Nigeria’s involved too. We’re at a major decision point. We can ride the AGI wave if we invest in skills, research, and good digital policies. We can make it work.

Big countries don’t have a monopoly on AGI’s future. It can also be in places such as Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, Kigali, and Johannesburg. Young Africans are using technology to solve actual problems.
