The Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order prohibiting VIO from impounding or fining motorists.
The Court made the order while giving judgment in a suit filed by human rights activist and lawyer, Abubakar Marshal.
The judge said the lawyer was right – there’s no law that gives the VIO the power to do any of that.
The judgment was about a lawsuit between Marshal Abubakar and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services and four others.
The court ruled that the 1st to 4th defendants have no legal authority to seize vehicles or fine drivers.
The Judge made a ruling to stop the 1st to 4th respondents from seizing or fining motorists for no reason.
The court also ordered the respondents to stop violating the rights of Nigerians to freedom of movement, presumption of innocence, and property ownership without a good reason.
