But before then, move on to how to build. Let’s see what self-confidence is not.

What Increasing Your Self Confidence Is Not?

As you exercise your courage, there is a level you must be careful of. And that’s being overconfident.

I will share with you 7 differences between increasing your self-confidence and being overconfident.

  1. Self-confidence allows you to do what is necessary to achieve your goals. Overconfidence allows you to ignore what is needed to achieve the same goals.
  2. You use your brain (logic) when acting with courage. Your heart (emotion) is at work whenever you become overconfident.
  3. You are realistic and concentrate better when acting with confidence. You lose focus and exaggerate more when you become overconfident.
  4. Increasing your self-confidence brings you peace, respect, and admiration from all. Being overconfident causes you mockery, frustration, and the loss of loved ones.
  5. Self-confidence conserves your energy. Being overconfident will wear you out, as you will try to do everything.
  6. When you are confident, you are humble in listening to others. It is difficult to accept other people’s opinions when you become overconfident.
  7. Self-confidence adds more life to your years. Overconfidence removes more years from your life.

3 Ways To Increase The Self Confidence In You

Know And Believe In Yourself

The personal way to increasing your self confidence

“A belief in yourself is a belief in God. And I have never heard God failed.”– Oluboba Ayodeji.

Good knowledge of who you are and what you want to be is the first step to increasing your self-confidence. It precedes all.

Knowing yourself helps perfect your strength while correcting your weakness.

No amount of courage will save a fish from dying on desert land. But place the same fish inside the ocean and see what happens.

It becomes important you know your Dos and Don’ts, Likes and Dislikes, etc.

You don’t tell Usain Bolt to be confident about his running skills. He knows it is one undeniable God’s gift in his life.

Or you tell Michael Phelps to be confident when he gets inside the water.

How about Messi on the football pitch?

“If every man will perfect his strength, then a message on self-confidence will be of no use.”

Oluboba Ayodeji

Every successful leader you know today had first identified with what he/she can do better than 99% of the population.

Why is this critical?

It makes it easy to choose your fight.

Paul said, “I have fought the good fight of faith”. He (Paul) didn’t go after all fights but chooses the one that is of faith.

“That you can do anything does not mean you should do everything.” Oluboba Ayodeji.

Always have this at the back of your mind.

You don’t have all the time here on earth. So, don’t waste your precious life (self-confidence) on the wrong thing.

2. Know And Master Your Craft

The professional way to increasing your self confidence

The more you do, the more you know. The more you know, the more you deliver. And the more you deliver, the more you become courageous.

I am yet to see any greater than this.

Whatever I am confident at today relies on the facts that I have done it before. And if I have done it before, I can do it again (even better).

Ask any writer about their experiences on their first writing. I guess it was close to hell.

But as soon as they keep writing more, it became like every daily activity.

Ever heard of entrepreneurs who fell completely but rose again? They could rise again because they had mastered their businesses.

The more I design ecommerce websites, the better my courage to design any.

Every excellent speech I had delivered was because I had a deep knowledge of the subject and understood the art of public speaking.

So, at those moments of speaking, I need not be checking if I am confident or not. No, it comes naturally.

Haven’t you heard that?

“Deliberate repetition is the mother of perfection.”

Oluboba Ayodeji.

While in school, one of my secrets to success was to master speed and accuracy in examinations, even to my last paper. But how?

I will set up an exam-like environment and answer 2 hours past questions in 1 hour.

The ones I failed, I will go back to check textbooks for answers and set the exam again.

When I do this repeatedly for three past questions on the same course, every fear of failure is dead and courage alive.

Then I became confident in my ability to pass the course, knowing that my help comes from God.

And by God’s Grace, I had no carryover (not one).

It is the little wins here and there that turn you into expert and thus increasing your self confidence.

“Success doesn’t need you doing anything new. You only need to make new what you have been doing.”

Oluboba Ayodeji

Know and Understand Your Audience

The physiological way to increasing your self confidence

“If you don’t know, ask them. When you then know, they will ask you?”

Oluboba Ayodeji

If I know in depth what you want, it becomes easy to meet you at the point of that need.

When you listen to someone speak or read an article? What catches your attention the most?

It’s the part that resonates with your needs.

You will increase your self-confidence when you know you solve people’s problems. And this is only possible if you know what the people want.

Aside from the fact that a doctor knows his craft, he understands his patients. So, you can expect him to be courageous as regards health.

I am saying this because it is one thing to know and master your craft. It is another to know and understand the people you want to serve.

Haven’t you seen job applicants who are professional in their field yet didn’t get the job?

Yes, they are good at what they do, but lack knowledge of whom they want to serve (the company).

Imagine you overheard your lecturer reciting your forthcoming exam questions to his colleagues.

How will you prepare for that exam? How will you go into the exam hall? With full confidence?

Let me tell you a story.

In my final year, a new lecturer taught us two courses.

I knew nothing about what he wanted from his students, and so lost interest and fell into last paper syndrome.

When the results were out, I was one mark to having carryovers in both of his courses.

In the second semester, I took my time to understand his style of marking and expectations.

Guess what? I had B and C in both courses.

So, knowing what your audience (parents, boss, friends, or children) wants is one of the surest ways that increase your self confidence.
