According to ASUU, governance in Nigeria has regressed and is now even worse than it was forty years ago.
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the union’s President, mentioned this at the ASUU State of the Nation Conference in Abuja on October 3, 2024.
The conference was held to discuss Nigeria’s crisis and find ways to bring back hope and development.
According to Osodeke, the nation is in a hopeless state because of corruption and terrible leadership.
He said Nigeria’s government needs a major change because it’s controlled by foreigners and only helps a few people.
The ASUU President was not happy that Nigerians are still struggling in poverty even though the country is super rich. They demanded that the nation’s resources be used for the greater good.
“As the nation marks its 64th independence anniversary, it is disheartening to note that the situation today is worse than it was in 1984,” Prof. Osodeke said.
He said the union’s mission isn’t just about better conditions for its members, but also about looking out for the socio-economic and cultural interests of the Nigerian people.
He said ASUU was created in 1978 to fight for those causes and they still organize national events to brainstorm better governance ideas.
Looking back at the first ASUU State of the Nation Conference in 1984 at UNIBEN, Osodeke compared the economic struggles back then to what we’re going through now.
