The East-West Center Grad Degree Fellowship supports grad students from Asia, the Pacific, and the US to study at UHM and engage in programs for education, culture, community building, and leadership development.
The goal of the East-West Center is to foster an Asia-Pacific community and develop future leaders. That’s why grad students live together and do stuff together.
They are a group that’s all about creating an Asia-Pacific community.
Getting a degree at UHM with an East-West Center fellowship is about more than just the scholarship. Apply now!
The graduate fellowship pays for tuition, fees, books, dorm housing, and some money for meals, insurance, and others.
They offer funding for field study and conference presentations, making them of the top USA scholarships for international students.
East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship: Award Details
The East-West Center Grad Degree Fellowship starts in August with the Community Building Institute. You will get to register and meet with advisors at the University of Hawai‘i.
1) If you’re single or married with no kids, you have to live in the Center dorms. If you have kids, you can’t stay on campus and have to find a place off-campus. No pets allowed in these dorms.
2) They award EWC Graduate Degree Fellowships each year. The grants are initially for twelve months, but renewable for another year if there’s enough funding and you are making satisfactory progress towards your degree and fulfilling East-West Center requirements.
3) If you’re not a US citizen or permanent resident, you’ll need a J-1 visa and must follow the US State Department’s Exchange Visitor Program.
4) If you are on an East-West Center sponsorship, you need to go back home for two years after your program.
5) If you have finished a degree through the East-West Center before, you can apply for another fellowship if you are eligible.
6) You can’t postpone the Graduate Degree Fellowship to a different semester or year. If you can’t make it to the EWC in August, just reapply.
7) The fellowship doesn’t cover spouses or dependents. They don’t give extra money or cover travel expenses based on whether you are married.
8) Degree fellows need to come to Honolulu alone for the first semester to get to know the Center, University of Hawai‘i, and Honolulu community before bringing their families from abroad.
By doing team-building, leadership projects, internships, and learning about Asia Pacific, EWC grad students make lifelong friends and connections to people who want to make a positive impact.
