Doctoral Finishing Fellowships Application 2025: Apply Now

Every semester, the Grad School gives financial support to PhD candidates who are almost finished with their degrees through Finishing Fellowships.

Alumni and friends of the University generously fund these fellowships.

They are looking for exceptional PhD candidates who need money to finish their degrees and are working towards The Michigan Tech Plan.

The Grad School plans to fund fellowships every semester, either fully or partially, depending on the student’s financial need.

This fellowship is one of the best scholarship you can apply for in the USA.

Doctoral Finishing Fellowships Eligibility and Application Procedures

You can apply for a Finishing Fellowship in the fall, spring, or summer, depending on funding. You can submit nominations for fall 2024 Finishing Fellowships starting May 6, 2024 to June 26 2024.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, you must meet all the following criteria:

1) Must be a PhD student.

2) Must expect to finish during the semester supported as a finishing fellow.

3) Must have submitted only one previous application for a finishing fellowship.

4) Must be eligible for candidacy (tuition charged at Research Mode rate) at the time of application.

5) Must not hold a final oral examination (“defense”) prior to the start of the award semester.

Previous recipients of a Finishing Fellowship are not eligible to reapply.

Application Procedure

Applicants need to put together an application package and submit.

Also, you should receive a letter of support from your advisor. The letter should:

  • Provide concrete information indicating what portion of the research and writing has been completed, 
  • Details about your financial need and the funds you are requesting. Also, let them know how you have been funded until now.
  • Address the likelihood of you finishing the PhD during the funding period, 
  • Describe the scholarly contribution of the student to published articles, and explain how important the publications are in the field.

Evaluation

A panel of faculty will review the applications from Michigan Tech’s Colleges.

They will evaluate applications based on:

  1. The impact and significance of the research.
  2. The candidate’s contributions to The Michigan Tech Plan now and their potential to make contributions in the future.
  3. The likelihood of finishing during the funding period.
  4. The applicant’s need for financial support.

Notification

The panel will notify all applicants of their decision within three weeks of the due date.

The organizers will request recipients to:

  • Write a thank-you note to the sponsor of their fellowship (required if applicable).
  • Have a photograph taken by a university photographer or provide a photograph.
  • Write a personal statement.

Michigan Tech will use the photo and personal statement to promote its top-notch grad students.
