The ideal website builder for your business is the one that will help you connect with your customers, manage your online store, and grow without straining your finances and future opportunities. When you have a small business in Nigeria, your selection is dependent on what you want the website to accomplish. A service business that creates leads has a different set of requirements compared to an e-commerce site where you collect payments. It is also important to factor in the cost of subscriptions in foreign currencies, payment solutions and the ability to maintain your website without the need for a developer. In this review, I analyzed seven website builders for cost, ease of use, artificial intelligence (AI), search engine optimization (SEO), mobile responsiveness, payment solutions and scalability. Below are the best website builders at a glance. Read further for full details and my recommendation. WordPress.com: Best Website Builder for AI-Assisted Site Creation If you want to have a business website without the hassle of designing everything from scratch, then it’s worth giving WordPress.com a shot. It has an AI website builder that can design the entire site for you from your description, which you can tweak based on prompts or in the WordPress editor. The website AI builder lets you create websites for consultancy, salon, construction, agency, restaurant, professional services, and even personal blog. It also lets you publish blog posts, create service pages and connect a custom domain, all from one website. All you need do is describe your business, the target audience, the pages you need and even the look you prefer. Based on that, the AI builder will design a starting website. You can further tweak the design, colour scheme, text and sections of the website rather than creating it from scratch. You should still go through each page before publishing it. Make sure that you replace the generic content, verify the contact information, test the form and button functionalities and that the images truly represent your business. Use WordPress AI Website Builder How Much Does Wordpress Site AI Builder Cost? The AI site builder works on the paid plans. You will have to pick a plan to start building and launching your AI built website publicly. There is also a free plan, which is different from the paid plan in some aspects. Currently, the AI site builder doesn’t make a full-fledged e-commerce site or give ecommerce solutions for you. You can install the WooCommerce plugin and configure it separately later. My recommendation: Pick the WordPress AI Website Builder if you’re looking for a professional website, blog or business with the help of an AI without stress. 2. Hostinger Website Builder Best Website Builder for Budget-Conscious Businesses If you are looking for a website for your small business that would not require you to pay for various separate services, Hostinger Website Builder should be considered as an option. The service provides a combination of building, hosting, and AI assistance in one, which makes it useful for those who run service businesses, freelancers, and small companies. One can start creating a website using the AI tool or choose a template and customize it. You can add all necessary data about your business and services, contacts, photos, and CTAs without having to write any code. SEO optimization settings and mobile-friendly templates are also included in the website builder's services. Depending on the plan one chooses, an online store will also be possible to create. What it costs The platform offers discounted rates, which can be less expensive compared to other platforms. The quoted rate might have you paying for several months or years at once. You can also make payments in Naira. Before signing up, ensure that you know all about the total price of the package, the subscription period, renewal rate, domain restrictions, and ecommerce limitations. You also need to understand the limitations of the built-in store functionality in the Hostinger platform. For more complicated features, integration, or specialized requirements, look elsewhere. Recommendation: Go with Hostinger if you’re looking for an inexpensive platform for a simple website and want to maintain your website and hosting on the same dashboard. Build with Hostinger 3. WordPress.org Best Website Builder for Flexibility and Control Self-hosted WordPress with WooCommerce gives you the power over your website, content, SEO, and eCommerce store. The free software solution allows you to choose any of these best hosting provider and any features that your business requires as you grow. The website can be a company website, blog, service business, or online store. You are not limited by an all-in-one site builder because you own your hosting and can adjust anything you need. However, it also means that the website security is fully up to you. Features Provided by WordPress and WooCommerce With WordPress, you get the power over your pages, blog posts, themes, and plugins. You can optimize your SEO, create content, integrate tools, and add business features to your site without rebuilding it again. With WooCommerce, you can sell your products online and manage your products, inventory, orders, coupons, and payments. Additionally, you can install extensions and plugins to expand your eCommerce capabilities. The WooCommerce plugin is free but some additional features require money. What it costs WordPress and WooCommerce plugins come at no cost at all. However, you will have to prepare for purchasing a domain name, hosting and premium themes/plugins if you wish to purchase any of those. Depending on your hosting services quality, needed features and maintenance workload, the total price will be different. While a cheap hosting will reduce your upfront expenses, poor performance and support from that company can make you spend extra on your customers being unable to use your website. You will be responsible for updating and maintaining your WordPress site's security, backups and installing new plugins. You also decide to choose from this list of best themes on WordPress. In case you work in Nigeria, WooCommerce can help you integrate many payment options such as Paystack or Flutterwave. My recommendation: If you want a flexible website or wish to build organic traffic and a store that can grow in the future, then I recommend you to use WordPress with WooCommerce. 4. Squarespace Best Website Builder for Design-Led Websites When your success hinges on how your projects are presented, Squarespace could be something worth looking into because of its professionally designed templates. It will enable you to create an impressive website to showcase the operations of your business or consultancy, photography services, individual brand or portfolio without having to design each page from scratch. Using the platform, you will have the ability to customise templates, write blog entries, showcase services, create contact forms, as well as make mobile-friendly pages. The integrated SEO options and website analytics will ensure that you can manage your website without using multiple external programs. Ecommerce functionality is among the additional options provided by Squarespace on selected plans. With it, you can showcase products, process orders and conduct transactions but you need to verify whether the payments accepted are relevant for your Nigerian business. What Does It Cost? There is a paid subscription-based model where the cost depends on the chosen plan and billing period. Your overall cost will include the cost of your domain, ecommerce costs, any paid integration costs and any other services. The price you should check when subscribing is the current price, the renewal cost and the applicable fees according to your planned use of the service. Considering that international payments may raise your costs in naira, calculate the annual cost of the service. Squarespace focuses more on having a managed platform and therefore, you have limited ability to modify the underlying software compared to a self-hosted WordPress site. Moving your entire website to another hosting may need you to reconstruct some parts of it. Payment compatibility is something to take into consideration by Nigerian companies. Make sure the payment provider and payment terms you plan to use are compatible with Squarespace. My Take: Squarespace for your business if design is a crucial part of your business. 5. Wix Best All-Round Website Builder for Small Businesses In case you are planning to create a professional website of your business without worrying about the hosting and installation of plugins, Wix will offer you a visual editor, artificial intelligence for making a website and business tools in one place. You will be able to create a site that will allow you to present your services or portfolio, create a blog, get requests or sell products. You will be able to describe your company and make an automatic website, or pick up a template and customize it by yourself. You can modify the structure of the site, add descriptions of your services, create forms for contacts and manage your website without any coding skills. There are also settings of SEO, integration with analytics and tools for business management, which will save you time on using several different tools. Costs Involved There is a free version by Wix for creating and testing your site. But when you want to use your own domain name or get rid of platform limits or accept payments from customers, then you should opt for an appropriate paid version. The actual cost for your plan depends on the place where you live, billing period and options you choose. The price at the time of ordering your plan, billing scheme and payment on renewals, should be noted carefully. In case if your plan is quoted in US dollars, consider the exchange rate and currency conversion fee charged by your bank. Paystack is supported by Wix for qualified Nigerian businesses. Payments can be made via Paystack depending on your configuration through cards, USSD and bank transfers. It's convenient to use Wix but keep in mind that you are building within the platform. Migrating to other platform could require rebuilding all website anew, therefore think about portability. My recommendation: Wix is the right choice when you want an easy way to build and manage a service-business website, portfolio or small online store without hosting issues. 6. Shopify Best Website Builder for Online Stores If selling products online is your primary operation, Shopify provides you with a platform where you can organize your products, inventory, orders, checkout, and sales channels. Your store will be operated without having to take care of the individual web hosting services or create an entire ecommerce platform. You can add your products, organize the collections, keep track of the stock levels, manage the orders of your customers and arrange shipping. Additionally, you get to have store themes, marketing tools, sales reports, and extensions that enable you to expand your store. In particular, Shopify is very helpful when you sell a lot of products or when you require a better management of your online orders. On the other hand, if you just need a couple of service pages and a contact form, you end up paying for features that you will not use. How Much Does Shopify Cost? According to the Nigeria pricing page of Shopify, their Basic plan costs US$19 monthly if billed annually, and US$27 monthly if billed monthly. The cost will be higher for the more expensive plans. These costs are subject to change, so you should look at the current ones. Additionally, Shopify states the cost of utilizing third-party payment processors, which starts from 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced under their current rates on annual billing. You may face additional fees imposed by your payment processor. Apart from the subscription cost, there might be apps that provide delivery service, marketing, product reviews, and other useful features. Additionally, paying in a foreign currency will put you at risk of currency fluctuation and possible bank fees. Before opening your store, you should try out the whole customer experience, including product selection, ordering, payment, order confirmations, delivery setting, and refund policy. My advice: You should use Shopify if you sell physical products and require special software to manage them. 7. Webflow Best Website Builder for Advanced Visual Design If you need greater design control over a website beyond the features of an average drag and drop tool, Webflow provides extensive options for page layouts, typography, animations and responsiveness. It is suitable for organizations who require a highly customized website and who have the time, skillset or money to deal with such a design approach. With Webflow, one can customize page layouts, create design components and publish content via its CMS. One also gets to control key SEO elements like page titles, meta description, URLs and redirection. All of these make Webflow a worthwhile choice for a design-based business, agency, professional services organization or website with much content. Nonetheless, the downside to Webflow is the steep learning curve. One will require the help of a designer or developer to handle it. How much it costs Webflow provides different pricing options for regular websites and websites using the CMS. For ecommerce sites, there are different pricing tiers altogether. The cost will depend on your hosting needs, content needs, and the features required. Webflow allows you to have a lot of design control, although it might be too complicated to create just a business website. In addition, you must test its ecommerce capabilities and make sure that your preferred payment gateway works for the configuration you want to set up in Nigeria. Just because a platform provides a lot of design control does not mean that it will help with search engine optimization of your website. You still require good content, proper website navigation, fast loading pages, and an easy way for your site visitors to get in touch with you or buy from you. My suggestion: Pick Webflow if you need design control and are prepared to deal with it yourself or hire a developer. Otherwise, if all you need is a basic website to conduct business, check out other options first. How to Choose the Right Website Builder for Your Business Consider the functions required from your site and how much you can afford as well as how you plan your business to develop in future. The cost-effectiveness of the initial package is not crucial, if the platform does not allow your customers to pay or provides the required features. Start From Defining the Functionality Required Identify the main function of your website before looking for a comparison of different platforms. Get customers in touch: Focus on service pages, contact forms, WhatsApp integrations, and appointment booking. Sell products: Take care about inventory management, check-out, delivery, payment gateways, and order tracking. Blog: Make sure that the platform allows blogging, SEO, categories, and content management. Display your portfolio: Pay attention to layout flexibility, galleries, and portfolios. Do not spend extra money on ecommerce features, if you want just to collect leads. At the same time, do not use the cheapest building platform for your online shop. Determine the Full Cost Take into consideration the full costs of website operation within at least one year, not only the indicated price per month. Consider your domain name, hosting service, website subscription, business emails, additional templates, plugins, payment system, as well as maintenance and renewal expenses. In case your subscription price is stated in US dollars, calculate its value in Nigerian naira, taking into account exchange rate variations and bank commissions. The cheaper website may turn out to be more expensive because of many paid add-ons required. You may request the total quote from the freelancer or agency developing the website for you. Ensure Website SEO and Mobile Optimization Website should be mobile-friendly and allow controlling all the necessary parameters for SEO. Make sure that you have an ability to manage the following parameters: page title, meta description, URL, images description and redirections. Website should also offer you the possibility to install your analytics tool, submit the sitemap and publish useful content with minimum restrictions. It is impossible to achieve high Google ranking using website builder only. The success of your website depends on other factors, such as content quality and website optimization. Verify Payment and Business Integrations For those selling online in Nigeria, verify that your chosen payment gateway works with your business, currency and settlement requirements. Other integrations you may want to verify include WhatsApp integration, booking tools, customer relationship management software, email marketing and delivery services. Verify all subscription or transaction fees before proceeding. Consider Ownership and Future Scaling Take into consideration what would happen if your business grows too big for the platform. Verify your ability to export your content, transfer your domain, migrate your customer data and recreate core functionalities on another platform. Certain platforms will make some parts of migration harder to accomplish, possibly even requiring manual migration or creating an entirely new website. Choose a platform that fits your needs right now and does not require costly upgrades for the future. You do not need the best builder out there, you need one that will fit your business for an acceptable price. How Much Does It Cost to Build a Website in Nigeria? There are many website builders available which allow you to create your own website, without paying a professional. The price you pay will depend on how complex your website needs to be, what website builder you choose, and whether or not the website builder offers hosting in their plans. What you should budget for ExpenseWhat affects the costDomain nameThe extension you choose, registration fees and renewal priceHostingStorage, performance, security and supportWebsite builderSubscription plan, billing period and renewal rateDesign and developmentNumber of pages, custom features and developer experienceBusiness emailNumber of mailboxes and providerEcommercePayment integration, store features, extensions and transaction feesMaintenanceUpdates, backups, security, content changes and technical support Comparison of building your own website vs. getting one built by a professional If you want to do it yourself, then you'll save money on labour, but you'll have to spend the time creating the pages, writing the content, setting up SEO, testing forms and payments. When you hire a web designer to do the job for you, then you'll pay more initially, but the result may be better-looking, and the professional will take care of everything for you. Make sure to ask for an estimated cost broken down per component (design, development, domain, hosting, licences and maintenance). For an estimate, it's important to compare prices for services of equal complexity. A five-page website about services cannot be compared to an e-commerce website selling hundreds of products. Frequently Asked Questions What Website Builder Should I Choose for My Small Business in Nigeria? It will depend on your customer acquisition strategy, your products/services and the level of control required. If you have a fairly simple website for your small business, then Wix and Hostinger may be a suitable choice. For something more advanced with more possibilities for content customization and SEO optimization, consider using WordPress. If you offer some products, compare Shopify with WordPress and WooCommerce, focusing especially on payment methods and pricing. Are There Any Free Website Builders? Yes, there are such solutions as WordPress.com, Wix and Google Sites, which offer free versions of their products. However, each of them comes with different limitations; you might have their brands on your site or skip some business tools. In case you require a custom domain name, professional email service and online payments, consider a paid version or extra services. Can AI Build a Website Without Coding? Yes, artificial intelligence can build websites automatically by following your directions and building layout pages, writing copy and selecting images. However, you will need to review the content created by AI website builders before you publish. Is Google Sites Sufficient for a Small Business? Google Sites can be sufficient if you only need an ordinary website where you will provide details of your company and the services you offer, and you won't require anything more advanced than that. If you need something more advanced, then it won't suit your needs. Which Website Builder Is Best for E-commerce Website in Nigeria? First of all, compare Shopify and WordPress with WooCommerce. You have to consider the payment gateways available, the settlement process, the delivery process, transaction fees, and the cost. Ensure that the payment gateway you would like to use works with your Nigerian company. Which Website Builder Is the Best for SEO? If you want full control over your content, technical SEO settings, and extensions, WordPress is the way to go. However, Wix, Squarespace, and Webflow offer great SEO controls too. Nonetheless, the ranking will be dependent on the aforementioned factors and more. Conclusion Select WordPress.com for AI-powered website creation on a managed hosting platform, WordPress + WooCommerce if you wish to have greater control over your website, or Wix if you simply want to create a small-business website easily. When selling goods or services online, decide between Shopify and WooCommerce, taking into account such factors as payment options, order processing, and general operational costs. In case the first and foremost requirement is to minimize costs, choose Hostinger. Squarespace will be ideal for design-focused companies, and Webflow is more fitting for websites that need visual control. Before making a payment, take into consideration the following aspects: the real total cost of website renewal, compatibility of your tools, payment options, and the ability to easily migrate to another website if necessary. Your website should help you achieve your business goals rather than cause you any additional expenses or complications because of your wrong choice.
