The Economy Is Not Your Experience

Are you aware that two things can be true at the same time?

The economy can be improving, and yet the lives of the people can still feel harder.

I had this thought after reading the latest reports on Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis. It says that the country is attracting investment. That the stock market has performed strongly. Capital is flowing in. We have very good numbers on paper.

But then you go to the market. You pay more to buy less. To fill your tank seems like a dream.

Then you realise, the economy is no longer a chart or a headline. It is personal.

This is something I think we often forget when we talk about progress.

A country does not become prosperous because its economic indicators improve. Those improvements must have a direct positive impact on the lives of her people.

And the same principle applies to business.

You can have impressive traffic and still have no customers. I see that a lot. Popular but broke.

You can have followers and still have no community. A beautiful website and still have no business.

You can project growth and still be struggling underneath.

The numbers matter, but the numbers are not the entire story. What matters is what those numbers produce.

That is why I have become interested in building things that solve actual problems rather than things that look impressive.

It is easy to chase the appearance of progress. We do that a lot.

The harder work is creating something that makes life easier. Nigeria needs more of this thinking.

More businesses that solve rather than decorate. More technology that reduces friction rather than creates another layer of complexity.

Institutions that measure success by outcomes rather than announcements.

So, my appeal to you is that we look beyond the headlines. Because sometimes the economy is growing while the person beside you is struggling.

Our responsibility is to make sure the first changes the second.

We will see tomorrow
