Bill Gates wrote a famous essay called “Content is King” in 1996. He said the internet’s big money would be in information, not only software. He’s still right, even till tomorrow.
Nowadays, most people see blogging as a digital journal or something they do for fun. That is a mistake. Starting a blog right now isn’t about sharing your feelings.
You can make a weak blog that’ll fail fast, or a strong website that’ll last. I know the difference because I am living it.
Right now, I’m turning Oluboba.com into a financial and technology platform instead of a blog. I’ve learned the hard way that the methods we used in 2015 are useless today, given AI and the crazy competition.
We have over 600 million blogs online today. It takes more than writing to get to #1 in Nigeria or the top 3 globally. You need to treat your content like it’s a product and your blog like a business.
I will not tell you to “follow your passion” in this guide. I’m going to reveal the money-making plans, and content strategies that make a blog profitable.
Let’s build your skyscraper.
Step 1: Pick a niche that makes money.
A huge misconception for new bloggers is thinking they need to cover every topic to get traffic. This is the “Lifestyle Blog” trap. If you’re a generalist in today’s world, forget about making good money.
Who makes more money: a family doctor or a brain surgeon? The specialist wins every time. This is the “Inch-Wide, Mile-Deep” rule. You should cover a tiny topic (an inch wide) but go deeper than anyone else (a mile deep).
The problem with “lifestyle” blogs is that they’re based on the blogger. Unless you’re famous, no one cares what you had for breakfast. Or bloggers who post the same news story as seen on 30+ more other blogs with no analysis of theirs.
People like problem-solving blogs since they address specific questions. If someone’s looking up “apps that pay real money in naira” they’re not looking for your personal history.
Picking a good niche means understanding how views and ad money work together.
| Niche Type | Traffic Potential | RPM (Pay) | Examples | Verdict |
| The Gossip Mill | High | Low ($0.50 – $2) | Celebrity news, Big Brother Naija updates | Avoid. You need millions of views to make rent. |
| The Gold Mine | Medium | High ($15 – $50) | SaaS reviews, Tech tutorials, Personal Finance | Sweet Spot. Good traffic, high value. |
| The Specialist | Low | Premium ($100+) | Solar installation in Abuja, Corporate Tax Law | Best for selling services/consulting. |
If you are targeting Nigeria, look for friction. Where does life get tough? Figuring out how to pay for Spotify with a Verve card is a sure bet since it’s a common problem.
If you’re going global, keep it fresh forever. Your post on “artificial general intelliugence AGI” needs to be top-notch to compete with the big guys. So make it better, faster, or more detailed.
Stick to your lane. Don’t give up. Take responsibility.
Step 2: The Technical Setup (Performance Is the New SEO)
How to build the foundation to start a blog in Nigeria and expand worldwide
Choosing your niche is like a building plan, and the tech is the foundation. I have seen bloggers use “$2/month unlimited shared hosting,”. Definitely, you can expect anything worthwhile from such service.
I’ll be straight with you. Don’t cheap out on hosting. If your site takes 5 seconds to load, Google will bury you, and your users will bounce.
Nobody would build a luxury shop in a slum. On the internet, “your hosting” is your location. So, you need these three things to get your blog to rank.
1. The Domain Strategy
A domain name is the name of a website. It is the address that web users can use to locate your blog on the internet. Oluboba.com is a domain name.
Use a .com domain for a global audience. It’s super trustworthy and the king of domains. But, if your plan is for the local market, such as “property management company in Nigeria” then use a .ng domain. It’s like having a phone number that starts with “+234”.
Before You Buy A Domain Name
- Use .com
There are lots of domains name extensions out there (.org, .net, and more) but none communicate more professionalism than a [.com].
- Choose a Generic Name
If you are in for a long time business, use a generic name or personal name. It is a single word name with no dictionary meaning.
It makes it easy to expand your blog to other topics if you ever decide to do so later. Also, the shorter the name, the better.
- Don’t use hyphens or numbers. You readers may forget them.
- Avoid domain names containing double letters.
- Stay away from the trademark names.
Here is a full guide to the best strategies for choosing a domain name.
2. Hosting: The “Bluehost” Pitfall
The real reason most “gurus” love Bluehost is that they receive up to 80% commissions when their referrals buy hosting. You may read my review of the best hosting companies.
While you may start from shared hosting, I encourage serious bloggers to stay away from it.
The issue is that shared hosting means your site is on a server with, like, 500 others. Your site slows down when it gets a lot of traffic.
So, go with any of these providers if you need serious hosting services. You can get a piece of a fast Vultr server from Cloudways for around $14 a month. It’s like the difference between being on a crowded bus versus driving your own car.
So, invest in your hosting. You can’t regret it.
3. CloudFlare is the key.
Cloudflare is a content delivery network (CDN). It makes copies of your website and keeps them on servers around the world.

It then shows your site to visitors from the closest location. Otherwise, someone in New York will have to wait on your Lagos server. Cloudflare APO makes your SEO way better, since your site loads fast.
Don’t build on sand. Build on speed. If you have the money, please make APO a necessity.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & Essential Setup
Mastering WordPress SEO for Beginners with the Right Setup
Now that you have your land, let’s build the house. A lot of new bloggers mess things up before they write anything. The theme they use looks beautiful, but it’s slow as a snail.
Can you imagine trying to sprint with a ton of extra weight? That’s what happens when you use big themes like Avada or Divi. They’re full of sliders, animations, and builders that you won’t even use.
Another not too good place to pick themes is Themeforest. Not because the themes are bad even though some can be overbloated. But rather because you can’t guarantee continuity. About four of my themes have been removed and some have not received updates for three years now.
For a serious media asset, you need a sprinter. I recommend the GeneratePress theme or any of these WordPress themes. They are lightweight, fast, and provide the clean code structure Google loves.
Also, you don’t need 50 plugins. Keep it max 12 to 15.
- RankMath’s taking the spotlight from Yoast. RankMath is the top pick for WordPress SEO plugins. It takes care of schema all by itself. That way, you get those fancy snippets and star ratings on Google. But if you need something lighter and simple, go with either SEO Framework or SlimSEO.
- If you want your site to load quickly, I recommend FlyingPress. It connects to the server and serves up pages right away. This is the best WordPress plugin for speed out there.
- The internet’s not always friendly. Don’t let a single attack cost you your years of hardwork. Wordfence protects your login page from those trying to break in. The free version takes care of your basic security needs.
Last thing, fix up the permalinks. Go to permalinks settings and pick “Post name” before you post.
- Bad: oluboba.com/?p=123 (p=123 doesn’t tell Google anything)
- Good: oluboba.com/how-to-start-a-blog (explains to Google what the page is about).
Do it on the first day. If you change it later, it will cost you your traffic.
Step 4: Content Strategy (How to Rank Without Backlinks)
My simple strategy to starting a Blog and Making Money from Day One
You have the tech, and you have the niche. Now, what do you write?
It may be tempting to write for keywords like “Best Apple iPhones Review.” You will never rank for that. That’s the territory of the big names, like The Verge or GSM Arena. The space has too many competitors.
Instead, you need a sniper rifle. I call it the “Zero Search Volume” strategy.
If you use SEO tools like Ubersuggest, you will see “0 monthly searches” for long-tail queries. Example: “How to make payment online without a dollar card.” Write on this.
What’s my reason? Much persons are not using these long tail keywords in writing. But they’re exactly what people are searching for. I built my early audience by covering topics that the big players won’t write about.
It’s better to be a shark in a river than to be a fish in an ocean.
The Hub and Spoke Model
Don’t be everywhere. If you write one post about AI, one about cooking, and one about crypto, you are sending a confused signal. Google wants topical authority. Topics that interconnect.
Imagine a library. If you have 50 books on “Solar Power,” you are the authority on solar. But if you have 1 book on Solar, 1 on Cats, and 1 on Football, you are another bookstore.
Choose a topic, like “online business that pays” and write 10 related posts before starting a new one.
On the issue of AI? Sure, use AI. But do not be lazy. If you tell ChatGPT to write a blog post, you are doing it wrong. Google doesn’t like that.
So, use AI for research, but write the final version yourself. Your voice is your uniqueness.
Step 5: Monetization Strategy (The “Hybrid” Model)
How to Maximize Blogging Income in Nigeria Using Hybrid Monetization
You’ll go broke if you only rely on Google AdSense in Nigeria. This is the simple math.
In the US, 1,000 views can earn a blogger $15. In Nigeria, the same 1,000 views might earn you $0.50. You would need millions of monthly visitors to make the kind of money you are looking for. I learned this the hard way so you don’t have to.
So, what should you do? My advice is that you use the hybrid model. That way, you don’t rely on one stream. You build a tripod; at least three (3) streams of income from one source.

As you can see from the pyramid, the higher you go, the less traffic you need to make money.
First Leg: Ad View
I don’t rely on ads to get rich, only to keep the site running. Get some traffic first, then apply to premium networks like Ezoic or Mediavine. They give you way more money than AdSense. Also, keep the ads small on your blog to avoid your site looking clumsy.
Second Leg: Strategic Affiliates
This is far better than ad views. You earn commissions for sales when you sign up with any of these affiliate platforms.
Promote software and platforms. I do that with the hosting service provider I use on my site. They pay in dollars.
Also, brands will reach out to you on their own when they see the quality of your works. So, your focus should be on how to give your best and make your blog work. But be selective in your choice.
Third Leg: Digital Products
This is where you will find Nigeria’s true blogging income. Why wait for 50,000 people to click an ad when you can sell one digital product to 50 people?
Write an ebook. Create a mini-course. Sell a template. Whatever you do, ensure you sell. That’s how people can pay you.
Use ecommerce platforms. They make it easy for customers to pay with a local bank transfer or card.

Look at this chart above. The red line is what happens when you rely on AdSense: you need 50,000 visitors just to buy lunch. The green line is the ‘Hybrid Model.’ Notice how the income explodes at Month 6?
That’s not because traffic doubled; it’s because you launched a $10 ebook. You stopped selling views and started selling value
You can earn ₦200,000 by selling the ₦2,000 digital product to 100 people. To earn the same amount with Adsense, you will need 400,000 AdSense views. Which is better?
Create your product. Own your income.
Step 6: Promotion & Distribution (The “First 1,000 Views”)
How to Boost Traffic for Profitable Blogging Niches
The whole “build it and they will come” thing is a lie. You’ll be writing 20% of the time and promoting 80%.
The Velvet Rope Strategy
Instead of spamming everywhere with your “Read my post” link, you can use the Velvet Rope approach. How?
Join communities (like Facebook groups) and answer questions without a link first. For example, someone asked, “What apps pay real money in Nigeria?”.
You write a helpful, detailed reply. Then, at the very end, say: “I wrote a full step-by-step breakdown of this with screenshots here if you need more detail.”
This way, you are not spamming; you are being helpful. The community moderators will respect you, and the users will trust you.
Repurpose
One blog post is not only a blog post. It is a seed.
- Use the main H2 and H3 headers to create a thread on Twitter.
- Take the key statistics and make a LinkedIn article.
- Turn the intro and outro and record a quick TikTok/Reel summary. Drive all that traffic back to your blog post.
The Email Lifeboat
Finally, start an email list on Day 1. This is one of my biggest mistakes. I wish I had started earlier.
Social media algorithms change. Facebook can ban your page. Your Twitter reach can die. But your email list is yours.
No matter what, start collecting emails, even if it’s only your mom and your best friend. This list will be your moneymaker when you want to sell your products.
Conclusion
From an idea to a real blog.
We shifted from the “Lifestyle” approach to a “Problem-Solver” way of thinking. We replaced our slow shared hosting with cloud servers that are way faster. Also, we moved on from only using AdSense to a more diverse way of making money.
This is not only about how to start a blog. It’s all about creating a digital media company that earns you money even when you’re sleeping. The market is ready for you. The only thing missing is you.
Now is the best time to buy your domain name and get started. No matter how big the internet is, you can still succeed. See you at the top.
FAQs on How to Start a Blog and Make Money in Nigeria
How much do I need to start a blog in Nigeria?
Start small. Expect to pay around $15 per year for a .com domain. You can get hosting for around $4/month. So, it’ll cost you around ₦70,000 to ₦120,000 for your first year.
Can I use my phone to blog?
Yes, you can write on your phone. But you will need a laptop for managing the site, and changing things around. You don’t need a MacBook. Start with any other you can afford.
How long does it take to make money?
If anyone tells you next week, or next month run. You should work for 6 to 12 months of consistent work before you see significant traction. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
Is blogging still profitable in 2025?
Yes, but only for those who know their niche. With AI, general blogs are dying; niche authority sites are winning. If you’re great at something, people will always want to come back to read.
