Lt. Glover of the Royal Navy established the Nigerian Army in 1863, starting with the name “Glover Hausas”.

Glover, being the governor of Lagos, took his small team to protect the British trade routes. It was both the police and military for the Lagos colonial government.

It got incorporated into the West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF) in 1901 and became the “Lagos Battalion”.

The merger resulted in the formation of the Northern Nigerian Regiment and Southern Nigerian Regiment, with Lt CHP Carter as the first commander.
