Following the end of the Second World War in 1945, nationalist members of the Royal Navy’s Marine Department put a proposal forward to establish the NPA.

At first, parliament members from the Royal Navy (colonial masters) were resistant because they believed it was their job to protect Nigerians.

But thanks to Mr. LL Olakunle’s persistence, the colonial administration gave the go-ahead for the Nigerian Naval Defence Force in 1956.

Today, we call it the Nigerian Navy.

Nigerian Navy Basic Recruitment Requirements

1) Only Nigerians, by birth, can apply.

2) If you are married, please do not apply.

3) It’s a plus if you are a computer literate.

4) Apply only if you are medically, mentally, and physically fit.

5) Females need to be at least 1.65 meters tall, and males should be 1.69 meters tall.

6) You must be clean of any criminal activities and not convicted by the court of law in the past.

7) You will present your SSCE certificate with at least 5 credits, including English and Mathematics.

8) If you’re an SSCE holder, you must be between 18 and 22 years old. For Nurses, NCE, OND, drivers, and others with higher qualifications, it’s 18 to 26 years.

9) Any applicant who falsifies or forges his/her documents will face the law.

Nigerian Navy Training Requirements

Once you are shortlisted, below are the training requirement.:

  • Original and photocopies of credentials
  • Four copies of 5 by 7 colour photograph without cap/hat,
  • Writing materials to include biro, pencils, ruler, notebooks and file jacket,
  • Three pairs of white (unmarked) round neck vests and navy blue shorts (without stripes) and two pairs of white and black socks.
  • Two pairs of pure black canvas trainers (rubber type NOT acceptable),
  • Two white bedsheets and pillowcases, two black trousers and white long sleeve shirts,
  • One blanket (grey or army green colour),
  • Two pairs of national dress or suit and casual wears with shoes, Bucket, cutlasses and brooms to be purchased on arrival, some pocket money and toiletries,
  • Two black cloth facemasks.
