My ex once said to me, “You are 0.00000001% emotionless.” Looking back today, I can say she is right.
I have seen a hidden sorrow common among many people who are ambitious. We want a significant career, so we provide for ourselves and those we care about.
Somewhere down the line, we miss the initial desire. The projects and businesses we are building damage our relationships with the people we love.
It’s not just a story that people break up when they’re super ambitious. It’s common for business owners to get divorced than those in a 9-to-5 structured life. When you’re deep in building something new, your relationship is at serious risk.
The worst part? It’s not that you fell out of love on the spot. It’s because the relationship just doesn’t have enough flame to keep it going.
You can be on a video call with your woman, yet you are far away at heart. Because there is a proposal you need to submit or a code you need to debug.
Now she has to compete with your ambition; she most times won’t win.
Let’s not talk about the stress of the day. By the time I stood up from my laptop, my emotion energy was already reading zero. At that moment, all I need is a quiet moment before I doze off.
After a careful look, I found a way out… I still don’t know if it will work.
Treat your partner like your co-founder. I tell people you can’t fall apart when your partner is into what you do.
I appreciate the Igbo wives for this who most times go to manage their husbands’ businesses. That way, they are into their husbands’ day-to-day operations.
When your partner is a stakeholder and not just a mere looker, your relationship won’t lack attention. So, carry her along. And you might also be interested in what she does.
Last, I am also building a system that keeps the business going without my presence. That way, you can have time for the important people in your life.
I will build a legacy and a have happy home. I need to be more intentional.
We meet again tomorrow.
