Generational Wealth: Is It Worth It?

It was early hours of a Saturday morning when I checked twitter.

On scrolling, I saw a post that intrigues me. And it says,

“You cannot build generational wealth with a single source of income!!!”

Then, a lady by the name, Falilat, quoted the tweet and replied, “

“Obsession with creating generational wealth is killing my people. If you are not from money, born in a country that puts x10 ahead, not with extraordinary talent, your chances of building generational wealth is 1%. Just make your bread and live.”

The first made his point and so the second. But my concern is, “Is it worth it?”

Generational wealth, as most people know, is amassing so much money for your family and then unborn children.

While this ideology of generational wealth is wrong, it still has some element of truth in it.

For clarity, building generational wealth is putting systems in place or creating an enabling environment that those coming behind you may find it easy to build upon and not start from scratch.

So, it’s not literally about storing up cash like some greedy political leaders in public office.

So, to the question of if it’s worth it.Only you can answer that in will to your purpose.

For me, it’s worth it, but not to your own detriment.

The Bible said in Proverbs 13:22 that a good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.

Yes, it’s a blessing if you can be the vessel to pull your family out of poverty. It’s something the average young seek in life.

It’s the reason people share testimonies of being the first to graduate in their family or to drive a car and so on.

In your pursuit of building generational wealth, focus on building systems not laying up cash.

Therefore, I encourage everyone to start a business. Business is a system where your children can inherit your years of connections and efforts without the need to begin from the start.

Unlike a job where your children or your partner can’t continue from your last role at the office.

Also, be watchful about the sacrifice you are paying to build this generational wealth.

You need to step back and have a rethink. Are the denials worth it? Are the sacrifices worth it.?

Consider your deteriorating health and relationship lost.

We can be so focused on building our tomorrow that we forget today.

Please put a balance to your ambition and purpose.

Work hard, live life, and follow your passion. Do the best you can do and the leave the rest for those coming to continue.

No matter how hard you work, you may still not make to the list of the world’s richest men that ever lived.

I will end with these words of wisdom from the scriptures.

18 Nothing that I had worked for and earned meant a thing to me, because I knew that I would have to leave it to my successor,

19 and he might be wise, or he might be foolish—who knows? Yet he will own everything I have worked for, everything my wisdom has earned for me in this world. It is all useless.

20 So I came to regret that I had worked so hard.

21 You work for something with all your wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and then you have to leave it all to someone who hasn’t had to work for it. It is useless, and it isn’t right!

22 You work and worry your way through life, and what do you have to show for it?

23 As long as you live, everything you do brings nothing but worry and heartache. Even at night your mind can’t rest. It is all useless.

24 The best thing we can do is eat and drink and enjoy what we have earned. And yet, I realized that even this comes from God.

25 How else could you have anything to eat or enjoy yourself at all?

26 God gives wisdom, knowledge, and happiness to those who please him, but he makes sinners work, earning and saving, so that what they get can be given to those who please him. It is all useless. It is like chasing the wind.

Learn when to stop even before you start. So, you don’t life your entirety chase the wind!

NOTE: This is not a call to settle for LESS!

I Celebrate You!
