Whether King Leopold II wrote that infamous letter doesn’t change the question it forces us to ask.
What if the most powerful way to control people isn’t violence? What if it’s the stories they believe?
This has always been clear to empires. They get in your head before they get your land. They make you believe the chains are holy before they confine you.
That’s why ideas are stronger than armies. You can get someone to do what you say for a day. Generations can obey a single belief.
You can find lots of examples in history.
Colonial governments used schools, churches, laws, language, and media to influence people’s self-perception. They sometimes provided true education, healthcare, and faith. They were sometimes used to control politics and money. The real danger wasn’t education or religion. The trouble began when they put power ahead of the truth.
The threat has not vanished since colonialism ended. It just changed its outfit.
Today, companies do it with branding and algorithms. Politicians use slogans to achieve their goals. Influencers create perfect-looking lives online. News outlets sometimes do it by picking what to focus on.
There’s a story behind every organization. But who is that story helping?
Freedom begins with better questions.
Not all loud talkers are trustworthy. You don’t have to follow every tradition. You don’t have to go along with every popular idea.
If someone controls what you believe, they don’t have to control much else. Guard your heart.
